Çeşme is a coastal town on Turkey’s western Aegean shore, located on a peninsula opposite the Greek island of Chios. Its name means “fountain,” reflecting the numerous historic springs and fountains found around the town. Çeşme combines a busy marina and waterfront with sandy beaches, wind-swept headlands, and villages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The town is centered on Çeşme Castle, which overlooks the harbor and forms a prominent landmark beside the waterfront. Its location and reliable winds have also made the surrounding peninsula an important center for sailing and windsurfing.

Çeşme Castle is closely associated with the town’s Ottoman and maritime history and now houses the Çeşme Museum, whose collections include archaeological objects and artifacts connected with the region. Nearby, the historic caravanserai reflects the town’s role as a stopping point for travelers and merchants. The peninsula also contains traditional villages such as Alaçatı, known for stone houses, narrow streets, and windmills. Turkish and Greek cultural influences can be seen in local architecture, food traditions, and place names, while the town’s historic fountains remain reminders of the water sources that gave Çeşme its name.

The Çeşme peninsula is known for its varied coastline, with sandy beaches, rocky coves, and clear Aegean waters. Ilıca Beach is particularly well known for its shallow water and naturally warm thermal springs, while Altınkum and Dalyan offer different coastal settings. Alaçatı’s beaches and bays are popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing because of the steady winds that cross the peninsula. The nearby Çeşmealtı area provides another harbor and coastal landscape, while boat excursions from Çeşme offer access to secluded coves and islands. Vineyards and olive groves occupy much of the interior, linking the coast with the agricultural character of the Aegean region.

Çeşme’s cuisine reflects its position between the Aegean and Anatolian food traditions. Seafood, olive-oil vegetables, herbs, artichokes, and local cheeses feature prominently in restaurants and markets, while dishes such as boyoz and kumru are closely associated with the wider İzmir region. The peninsula is also an important wine-producing area, with vineyards benefiting from the coastal climate and local grape varieties. Alaçatı is known for restaurants serving contemporary interpretations of Aegean cuisine alongside traditional dishes. Local markets provide seasonal produce, olives, herbs, jams, and other foods from the surrounding villages, reinforcing Çeşme’s connection with the agricultural landscape.

Istanbul
Istanbul
Istanbul is a city built on layers of empire. Spanning two continents, it was once the capital of three major empires: Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Visitors walking through the Sultanahmet district can witness this timeline firsthand, from the Roman-era Hippodrome to the Byzantine mosaics of Hagia Sophia, and the towering minarets of the Blue Mosque. At nearby Topkapi Palace, rooms still display the jeweled swords, ceremonial robes, and handwritten Qurans once used by Ottoman sultans.
