Springfield is the capital of Illinois and a city closely associated with Abraham Lincoln, whose home, law practice, and political career were based there before he became president. Located in the central part of the state, Springfield sits amid the prairie landscape of the Sangamon River Valley. The city combines government institutions with historic neighborhoods, museums, parks, and cultural attractions. The Illinois State Capitol forms the center of the state government complex, while the surrounding streets include preserved buildings connected to Springfield’s development as a political and commercial center.

Lincoln’s legacy shapes much of Springfield’s cultural identity, with several places preserving connections to his life and work. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum presents exhibits about his life and the broader historical context in which he lived. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site preserves the house where he lived with his family, along with surrounding historic residences. Oak Ridge Cemetery contains Lincoln’s Tomb, while the Old State Capitol is associated with his political career and public speaking. The city also reflects African American history through institutions and sites documenting the community’s role in Springfield.

Springfield offers attractions beyond its Lincoln sites. The Illinois State Capitol features a tall dome and ornate interior, while the Illinois State Museum explores the state’s natural and cultural history. Washington Park includes gardens, walking paths, a botanical garden, and the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon. The Dana-Thomas House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is one of the city’s notable architectural landmarks and contains extensive examples of his Prairie School design. Outside the central area, Lake Springfield provides opportunities for boating, fishing, walking, and birdwatching along a large reservoir created on the Sangamon River.

Springfield’s food traditions include several dishes strongly associated with central Illinois. The horseshoe sandwich, consisting of meat or another savory topping served over toast and covered with cheese sauce and fries, originated in Springfield and remains a recognizable local specialty. Cozy Dog Drive In is associated with the development of the corn dog and is a well-known stop along the city’s Route 66 heritage. Springfield also sits within an agricultural region where corn, soybeans, livestock, and other crops are important to the surrounding economy. The combination of state government, Lincoln history, Route 66, and prairie agriculture gives the city several distinct local identities.
