Jyväskylä is a city in central Finland surrounded by forests, lakes, and rolling hills, with Lake Jyväsjärvi forming a prominent part of its southern edge. It is the regional center of Central Finland and has a strong connection with education, design, and modern Finnish architecture. The city is known internationally for buildings designed by Alvar Aalto, whose work includes the University of Jyväskylä campus and several civic buildings. Jyväskylä also has a compact center, an active lakeside area, and easy access to the surrounding Lakeland landscape, making the relationship between city and nature particularly visible.

Education has played an important role in Jyväskylä’s identity, with the city developing a strong tradition of teacher training and higher education. The University of Jyväskylä campus contains several buildings designed by Alvar Aalto, while the Alvar Aalto Museum presents the architect’s work and influence on Finnish design and architecture. The city also has a long association with Finnish sports and hosts major events connected with rallying, athletics, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Local cultural life includes museums, theaters, galleries, and festivals, giving Jyväskylä a role as a cultural center for Central Finland.

Jyväskylä is surrounded by water and woodland, with Lake Jyväsjärvi providing a central recreational area close to the city center. The Rantaraitti lakeside route follows the shore and is used for walking, cycling, and running, while nearby hills provide viewpoints across the lake district. The Harju ridge rises directly beside the center and contains wooded paths and the Vesilinna observation tower. Beyond the city, Päijänne National Park protects islands, rocky shores, forests, and waterways on Lake Päijänne. The surrounding region is also known for its numerous lakes, making boating and fishing important seasonal activities.

Food in Jyväskylä reflects Central Finland’s wider traditions, with fish, rye, berries, mushrooms, potatoes, and other locally sourced ingredients common in regional cooking. Lake fish such as perch and pike are part of the local food culture, while wild berries and mushrooms are gathered from the surrounding forests. The city also has a growing selection of restaurants, cafés, and producers working with Finnish ingredients. A distinctive feature of Jyväskylä is its concentration of Alvar Aalto architecture: visitors can encounter his work in buildings, interiors, and urban spaces across the city rather than in a single isolated landmark.

Helsinki
Helsinki
Nature is never far in Helsinki. Locals swim in the sea, walk forested trails, and gather mushrooms or berries all within city limits. One popular local habit is heading to the sauna, and the city offers several open-to-the-public options. Löyly, located on the waterfront, combines traditional wood-burning saunas with a sleek, modern design. In winter, visitors can even pair a sauna session with a quick dip through a hole cut in the ice for an experience both shocking and strangely calming.

Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi, located just a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, is widely recognized as the official hometown of Santa Claus. From late August through early April, the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights, and several local guides offer nighttime tours to remote locations for optimal viewing. During summer, the sun doesn't set for weeks, giving travelers the rare chance to hike or kayak under a sky that stays bright at midnight.
