Corinna is a small, remote settlement on Tasmania’s west coast, set beside the dark waters of the Pieman River at the southern edge of takayna / Tarkine. Once a gold-mining settlement, it is now centred on a wilderness village surrounded by cool-temperate rainforest, rivers, and rugged country. Corinna has no mobile phone coverage and very limited supplies, giving it a distinctly secluded character. Access from the south involves crossing the Pieman River on the Fatman barge, while roads from the north pass through the forested landscapes of Tasmania’s Western Wilds.

Corinna’s identity is closely connected with the mining and pioneering history of Tasmania’s west coast, while the wider takayna / Tarkine region holds deep Aboriginal cultural significance. The landscape contains evidence of long-standing Aboriginal occupation, including archaeological sites and cultural places across the north-west. European mining activity left its own traces around Corinna, where old settlement buildings and tracks remain part of the local story. Today, the area is managed as a place where visitors can experience the rainforest and river environment while recognising the cultural heritage and continuing Aboriginal connections to the region.

The Pieman River is the centrepiece of Corinna, winding through dense rainforest before reaching the Southern Ocean. The Huon Pine Walk is a short, accessible trail following the riverbank to an old Huon pine growing beside the dark water. Longer walks include the Whyte River Walk and the Mount Donaldson route. Kayakers can paddle along the Pieman River toward Lovers Falls, a rainforest waterfall reached by water. River cruises aboard the Arcadia II travel downstream toward Pieman Heads, offering views of Huon pine, myrtle, blackwood, and other rainforest vegetation.

Food and accommodation in Corinna are deliberately limited, reflecting its remote setting. The Tarkine Hotel includes a restaurant serving meals and local produce, while the historic Old Pub, miners’ cottages, and camping areas provide places to stay among the forest. The surrounding rainforest supports plants and wildlife adapted to Tasmania’s cool, wet west coast, including ancient Huon pine and myrtle beech. Corinna is also a useful base for exploring takayna / Tarkine, an extensive wilderness region containing rainforest, buttongrass plains, wild rivers, mountains, and a rugged coastline. Visitors generally need to arrive well prepared because services are scarce.
