Kariega Game Reserve is a private wildlife reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, near the coastal town of Kenton-on-Sea. Covering approximately 11,500 hectares, it occupies a landscape of rolling hills, open grasslands, wooded valleys and river corridors. The reserve lies within a malaria-free safari region and offers opportunities to observe African wildlife in a setting close to the Indian Ocean coastline. Two rivers, the Kariega and Bushmans, are important features of the property, providing habitats for birds and other animals. Kariega operates several safari lodges, combining guided wildlife viewing with accommodation in different parts of the reserve.

The reserve lies within a region shaped by Xhosa cultural traditions, agricultural settlement and the conservation of indigenous wildlife. IsiXhosa and English are widely spoken in the surrounding Eastern Cape, where cattle farming and rural communities remain important parts of local life. Kariega’s land was previously used for agriculture, and its development as a wildlife reserve has involved restoring natural habitats and reintroducing indigenous animals. Conservation work includes wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching activities and community support initiatives. The Kariega Foundation works with local communities on education, conservation and social development, connecting the reserve’s tourism activities with the surrounding region.

Kariega supports the Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, rhinoceroses and African buffalo. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, hippos, wildebeest and several antelope species. Guided game drives travel through grasslands and dense Eastern Cape thicket, while river cruises offer opportunities to observe waterbirds and wildlife along the banks. The reserve’s vegetation includes elements of the Albany Thicket biome, with spekboom, thorny shrubs and other plants adapted to the region’s conditions. Walking safaris provide another way to explore the landscape with experienced guides. The nearby Indian Ocean coastline adds a contrasting environment of sandy beaches, estuaries and coastal vegetation.
