Boadzulu Island is a small, forested island in Lake Malawi, located within the lake's southern basin near Cape Maclear. The island forms part of Lake Malawi National Park, a protected area recognized for its exceptional freshwater biodiversity. Its shores are surrounded by clear lake waters, rocky outcrops, and small bays, while vegetation covers much of the island's interior. The lake's sheltered southern waters create a setting suited to boating and swimming, and the island provides a quiet contrast to the busier mainland shoreline. Its importance comes largely from its place within one of Africa's most significant freshwater ecosystems.

Boadzulu Island lies within a region where lake-based traditions are closely connected with local communities. Fishing has long been important around Lake Malawi, with traditional dugout canoes and other small boats used on the water. Communities around Cape Maclear and the southern lakeshore include people from several cultural groups, with Chichewa widely spoken in the area. Lake Malawi also has an important place in local food and livelihoods, particularly through freshwater fish. The protected status of the island and surrounding waters reflects efforts to conserve the lake while allowing local communities to continue traditional activities in designated areas.

The waters around Boadzulu Island are the main attraction, with rocky shorelines dropping into clear freshwater that supports numerous species of brightly colored cichlid fish. Lake Malawi is renowned for its exceptional diversity of these fish, many of which are endemic to the lake. Snorkeling and diving around the island can reveal rocky underwater habitats populated by cichlids and other freshwater species. The wider Lake Malawi National Park also includes nearby islands, beaches, forests, and granite formations. Boat trips provide access to Boadzulu and other parts of the protected area, while the surrounding lake offers opportunities for kayaking and swimming.

Freshwater fish is an important part of the local cuisine, with chambo, a type of tilapia native to Lake Malawi, being especially well known. Other fish caught in the lake include usipa and kampango, which are prepared in a variety of local dishes. The lake's clear water and rocky habitats support a remarkable concentration of endemic fish species, making the area important for freshwater research and conservation. Boadzulu's setting within Lake Malawi National Park also places it inside a protected landscape where island forests, rocky shores, and underwater habitats are managed together. This connection between freshwater biodiversity and local lake culture defines the island's significance.

Lake Malawi - The Lake of Stars - is an immense inland sea of fresh, crystal clear water in which tropical fish abound. Its shores and the deserted islands which dot its surface are home to a variety of game and an abundance of exotic birdlife. Local fishermen leisurely paddle their traditional "mokoros", or dugouts, across its expanse, and the sun drenched serenity is but enhanced by the shriek of a Fish Eagle or the grunting of distant hippo.
