Salmon Arm is a community on the southern shore of Shuswap Lake in British Columbia’s Southern Interior. Its location places the city between Kamloops and Revelstoke, with the lake, surrounding hills, and forested valleys shaping the local landscape. The community takes its name from the southwest arm of Shuswap Lake, which was historically associated with salmon runs in the waterways entering the lake. Today, Salmon Arm serves as a regional centre for the Shuswap area, combining a compact urban core with extensive parks, trails, waterfront spaces, and agricultural land.

Salmon Arm lies within the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation, whose traditional territory includes the Shuswap Lakes region. The area has long been connected to fishing, hunting, gathering, and travel along the lake and surrounding waterways. Later settlement grew significantly with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which helped establish Salmon Arm as a transportation and agricultural community. Local heritage can be explored at the R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum, where historic buildings and collections illustrate everyday life and the development of the region.

Shuswap Lake is central to Salmon Arm’s outdoor environment, with Marine Peace Park providing waterfront trails, picnic areas, a boat launch, and a freshwater wharf. Salmon Arm also has more than 123 kilometres of city trails and greenways, including routes through wetlands, forests, parks, and along the lake shoreline. The nearby South Canoe trail system provides opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, while Salmon Arm Bay is known for its bird habitat. The combination of lake, wetlands, wooded hills, and agricultural areas creates a varied landscape within and around the city.

Food traditions in Salmon Arm reflect its agricultural surroundings and the productive growing conditions of the Shuswap region. Local farms produce fruits, vegetables, berries, and other seasonal products, while the area’s lakes and rivers support fishing traditions. The city also hosts the Roots and Blues Festival, which brings music, workshops, food, and cultural activities to the community. A distinctive local feature is the long wooden wharf at Marine Peace Park, which extends into Salmon Arm Bay and provides access to views of the waterfront and surrounding habitat. Together, agriculture, music, heritage, and the lake remain important parts of Salmon Arm’s identity.

Today, visitors can explore this rich cultural heritage at the Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park, where trails lead through archaeological sites and reconstructed pit houses.
