Engelberg is a mountain village in central Switzerland that rises up at the foot of the mighty Titlis peak, a limestone giant reaching over 3,200 metres above sea level. The village grew around a Benedictine monastery with a long history that still lives in its streets and buildings. Visitors can explore the abbey’s baroque church and gardens, and learn about local traditions at the Tal Museum, which displays things like old tools, photographs, and scenes of daily life from the 18th century onward.

The journey up to Mount Titlis is unforgettable too. Guests take a train and cable cars, including the Rotair, the world’s first rotating aerial tramway that turns slowly as it climbs, offering views in every direction. At the top there’s a glacier cave to walk through with ice formations carved like frozen tunnels, and the Titlis Cliff Walk, a narrow suspension bridge spanning a deep mountain gap. For many, crossing the bridge and looking across the Alps is one of the most memorable moments of a Swiss trip.

In Engelberg visitors can enjoy activities in all seasons. In winter, snow covers long ski runs, and slopes of all levels stretch down towards the valley. In warmer months, the same lifts take hikers to high meadows where paths lead past lakes and ridges with spectacular views. One such walk is the Four Lakes Hike, a trail that winds between shimmering alpine lakes and past grassy huts. Down in the valley, the Brunni area has gentle slopes, a summer toboggan run, and even barefoot trails around quiet ponds, offering a different side of the Alps.
