Udawalawe National Park, located in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the country’s best places to see wild elephants in their natural environment. Established in 1972, the park protects an important watershed area around the Udawalawe Reservoir and provides a sanctuary for hundreds of elephants, which can often be seen roaming in herds across the open grasslands. Safaris here almost guarantee sightings of these giants, making the park a favorite for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

The landscape of Udawalawe is striking in its simplicity: vast savannah-like plains dotted with scrub, marshes, and the shimmering waters of the reservoir. This open terrain allows for excellent wildlife viewing, not only of elephants but also water buffalo, crocodiles, sambar deer, and an impressive variety of birdlife. Raptors soar above the grasslands, while colorful kingfishers, bee-eaters, and hornbills add vibrancy to the quieter corners of the park.

Unlike some of Sri Lanka’s more forested reserves, Udawalawe’s wide-open vistas create a feeling of space and freedom, with sunrise and sunset safaris offering dramatic light over the plains. Visitors often describe the atmosphere as both wild and serene. It's a chance to witness animals on their own terms, with the distant backdrop of the rugged Central Highlands adding to the sense of place.
