Harpers Ferry is a small historic town in West Virginia's eastern panhandle, positioned where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet within a gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Much of the community is preserved within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, where narrow streets, historic buildings, river views, and wooded slopes create a setting closely tied to the landscape. The town is known for its role in American history, but its location also makes it a destination for hiking, climbing, fishing, and river recreation. The surrounding mountains and waterways remain central to the community's identity.

Harpers Ferry has a layered history involving Indigenous peoples, industry, transportation, the struggle against slavery, the Civil War, and African American education. The area lies on the ancestral homelands of the Tuscarora and Shawnee peoples. John Brown's raid on the federal armory became one of the community's defining historical events, while Storer College later became an important institution for African American education and civil rights. The historic Lower Town contains museums and exhibits interpreting these stories, including John Brown's Fort, the Industry Museum, and sites connected with Storer College and the Niagara Movement.

The town's most distinctive natural feature is the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, known locally as The Point. Jefferson Rock provides a historic overlook, while Maryland Heights and Loudoun Heights offer higher views of the rivers, town, and surrounding mountains. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park contains more than 20 miles of hiking trails, including sections of the Appalachian Trail. Visitors can also follow paths through the ruins of Virginius and Hall's Islands, explore Civil War sites, or cross the Potomac on a pedestrian bridge to reach the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath in Maryland.

Harpers Ferry's small-town food scene includes cafés, bakeries, restaurants, and specialty shops concentrated around the historic Lower Town and nearby Bolivar. Local businesses serve casual meals, sandwiches, baked goods, and regional dishes suited to visitors exploring the town on foot. A distinctive detail is the area's connection to water-powered industry: the steep drops of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers once provided power for mills, factories, and the federal armory. Today, the surviving foundations, canals, machinery remains, and industrial ruins offer a visible reminder of how the rivers helped shape Harpers Ferry's economy and physical landscape.
