Wheeling is a historic city in northern West Virginia, set along the Ohio River near the state’s border with Ohio. Its location made it an important transportation and manufacturing center, with the National Road, railroads, and river traffic all contributing to its growth. Today, Wheeling combines a compact downtown with historic neighborhoods, riverfront parks, cultural venues, and extensive recreation areas. Centre Market, Victorian Old Town, and the waterfront provide some of the city’s most distinctive settings, while Oglebay Resort adds a large recreational area in the surrounding hills.

Wheeling has a strong connection to the political and industrial history of West Virginia. The city served as the seat of the pro-Union government that helped establish the state during the Civil War, and West Virginia Independence Hall remains one of its most important historic landmarks. Wheeling also developed major industries in iron, steel, glass, and manufacturing, attracting immigrant communities from Europe and elsewhere. Centre Market reflects this heritage through its historic buildings, locally owned businesses, and long-standing role as a gathering place. The city's preservation districts contain churches, residences, commercial buildings, and industrial structures representing these different influences.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is one of the city's best-known landmarks and spans the Ohio River between Wheeling Island and the mainland. Oglebay Resort provides another major attraction, with golf courses, gardens, hiking trails, skiing, a zoo, and other recreational facilities. The Wheeling Heritage Trail system includes more than 18 miles of paved paths following the Ohio River and Wheeling Creek, with sections passing through wooded areas and former railroad corridors. Heritage Port provides riverfront access in downtown Wheeling, while nearby Wheeling Park offers a lake, swimming, golf, gardens, and year-round recreation.

Wheeling's food scene reflects the city's immigrant history and its location in the Ohio Valley. Centre Market contains a collection of restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and specialty shops, making the district one of the city's main places for locally focused dining. Glassmaking is another distinctive part of Wheeling's cultural identity, with museums and collections preserving examples of the decorative and industrial glass produced in the region. The city also has a strong performing arts tradition through the Capitol Theatre, Towngate Theatre, and Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. Together, these institutions connect Wheeling's industrial past with its continuing role as a regional center for arts, food, and entertainment.
