Fortaleza, on Brazil’s northeastern Atlantic coast, greets visitors with wide sandy beaches that stretch for miles along warm, blue water. Praia do Futuro stands out for its lively beach bars, known locally as “barracas,” where fresh seafood and cold drinks are served just steps from the waves, and golden sunsets are a daily highlight. A stroll along the boardwalk at Meireles offers views of the calm sea and the daily hustle of cyclists, joggers, and fishermen hauling in their catch. Beyond the city’s shoreline, dramatic dunes and inviting waters make Fortaleza an ideal base for exploring nearby beach towns like Cumbuco and Canoa Quebrada, each with its own rhythms and landscapes.

The cultural heartbeat of Fortaleza resonates through its museums, markets, and performance venues. The Dragão do Mar Cultural Centre brings together galleries, theaters, and a planetarium, making it easy to spend an afternoon immersed in local arts and history. At the Mercado Central, more than 500 stalls fill a historic space with traditional crafts, lace, sweets, and local produce that reflect Ceará’s heritage. For a quieter moment, the Catedral Metropolitana stands tall with its neo-Gothic design, offering a glimpse into the city’s past and architectural influences.
